Stila has recently put out a ton of new products! I was so excited to get my hands into these products, and I'm finally ready to give my opinion! First of all, the new gold packaging is a HUGE upgrade from the old cardboard packaging that Stila is known for. I think everyone is a little tired of the cardboard, so to have the brand step it up and give us some luxury, was a very welcomed change! There is a lot of newness, so let's jump right in!
I was really hard on these products (like I usually am) because they are definitely pricey, and you get a lot of product. For that reason, you need to love both of these shades to make this duo worth it. I grabbed the light shade right away (because I am so pale right now I almost look sick) but I was super let down. The contour shade in the Light duo is super warm, and the highlight shade was more of a concealer for my skin tone. I did a full face of contour using this, and I looked so Oompa Loompa like at the end of it, I immediately took it off and totally forgot to even take a picture. I decided to try the medium duo, and I absolutely loved the contour shade in it. It's a nice, cool toned product, that looks amazing on my lighter than light skin tone. The issue is, the highlight shade is so peachy, that the only use I have for it, is as an undereye corrector. (Think Benefit Erase Paste style) it would be totally useless for me as a highlight. And as mentioned before, I would need to love both shades to make this worth it.
Disappointment about the shade choices aside, let's take a minute to talk about the formula. As soon as I swatched it, I was surprised at how oily it felt. It swatched really easily, and when applied to the face, they blend very easily. This product stayed on my skin all day, and the double ended brush that they recommend to use with these duos, is amazing. Final thoughts on these, swatch them before purchasing. If you're lucky enough to find a duo that has two colors you're happy with, I would recommend them for sure!
Along with the contour duos, Stila launched their Lush Lips Water Plumping Primer. This two in one primer promises to treat and prime, all while hydrating and plumping the lips. The first time I tried this, I used way too much and I hated the way it felt. It was completely my fault, and I'm glad I tried it again, because when you use a thin layer, and give the product time to dry before applying your lipstick, this does perform really well. My lipstick definitely wore longer than normal, and although I didn't see a huge amount of plumping, I did find that the dry lines on my lips were much less noticeable. I think this would be great layered under a matte formula.
Now that we got all of that out of the way, it's all about brows. Brows, brows and more brows. Three products launched (two new, one repackaged) and like everything else, I have a pretty strong opinion on them! Let's compare shall we?
These brow gels are definitely a different type of product. First things first, $44 is a lot. I love that you get the brush, because the brush itself is beautiful. However if you wanted to repurchase, you'll be paying for a brush everytime, and will end up with a few of them. As a freelance makeup artist, I like getting a brush with each color, but as a normal consumer, it's a bit wasteful. The gels are extremely pigmented, and to avoid wasting product, I recommend picking up the product directly from the tube with the brush. Again, I had a fairly hard time finding a shade that matched me perfectly. Medium Brown was too warm for me, and Dark Brown was too dark. Medium Brown and Blonde mixed turned out okay, but I don't have time to be mixing up a cocktail every morning for my brows! The product did stay all day, and I can tell when Sabah is using this on her brows as well. The blonde shade on her is perfect, and she loves it. Similar to the contour palettes, if you can find a suitable shade, then I say go for it. They take a little getting used to, but if you want bulletproof brows, try these! They won't move on you all day!
I don't know if you guys can tell from the swatches, but these are the driest pencils I've ever encountered for brows. I had the urge to hit the top of the pencil with a lighter to smooth the formula out, but for the sake of the review I wanted you guys to see what you actually get. I prefer my brow pencils to be more dry than my eyeliners. You don't want something overly creamy, as it will smudge all over you during the day. These in my opinion, are simply way too dry. I had to really press to get any color payoff. The last straw for me, was when I picked it up one morning to give it another chance, and the entire lead fell out of the pencil. That's how dry these are! I'd say save your money on these ones, and buy the Beautiful Color Brow Pencil by Elizabeth Arden. They are $3.00 cheaper, and you get almost double the product than you get with Stila.
Let's end on a high note shall we? I absolutely LOVE these pens. They have a super fine tip that gives you so much control, I love the colors, and they last all damn day on your face. I always recommend these to people travelling down south, because the formula is waterproof, and they are so easy to use. Simply feather the product in and watch your brows come to life. It makes it super easy to extend the tail of your brow, and it always looks natural. The light shade is fairly warm, and the medium shade is much cooler. I find it easy to match all sorts of skin tones and hair colors to these three pencils, and I am happy to see that the packaging got a revamp!
Phew, I am exhausted. That was a huge blog post. What do you guys think of the collection?
